If you love waterfalls, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is one of the best places in the Midwest to go waterfall hunting. With almost 300 waterfalls scattered throughout the U.P., you can spend a day visiting several easy-to-reach falls or make an entire vacation out of exploring the more remote waterfalls hidden throughout the forests.

From the famous Tahquamenon Falls in the eastern U.P. to Bond Falls in the western Upper Peninsula, these waterfalls come in all shapes and sizes. Some thunder over massive rock ledges, while others quietly tumble through forests, sandstone canyons, and rocky riverbeds.

And the fun doesn’t stop when summer ends. Spring snowmelt can make waterfalls roar, autumn surrounds them with brilliant fall colors, and winter can transform them into spectacular walls of ice.

Famous Upper Peninsula Waterfalls

Some U.P. waterfalls have become destinations in their own right.

Tahquamenon Falls

Tahquamenon Falls is one of Michigan’s most famous waterfalls and one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. The Upper Falls stretch approximately 200 feet across and drop about 50 feet. The falls are located within Tahquamenon Falls State Park, which covers nearly 50,000 acres and includes more than 35 miles of trails.

The park also includes the Lower Falls, where the Tahquamenon River divides around several small islands. Visitors can explore both areas and enjoy hiking, photography, wildlife watching, and other outdoor activities.

Bond Falls

Located in Ontonagon County near Paulding, Bond Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in the western Upper Peninsula. The Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River cascades over a broad series of rocky ledges, creating a waterfall approximately 50 feet high and about 100 feet wide.

One of the reasons Bond Falls is so popular is its accessibility. You don’t have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy the falls, making it an excellent stop for families and travelers exploring the western U.P.

Munising Falls

Munising is surrounded by waterfalls, and Munising Falls is one of the easiest to visit. A paved trail leads approximately a quarter mile through a shaded sandstone canyon to viewing platforms overlooking the 50-foot waterfall.

The Munising area is an especially good starting point for a Michigan Upper Peninsula waterfall tour, with numerous additional waterfalls located throughout Alger County and nearby Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Waterfalls Near Pictured Rocks

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is famous for its colorful sandstone cliffs, beaches, caves and Lake Superior shoreline, but the area is also home to several beautiful waterfalls.

Among them are Miners Falls, Mosquito Falls, Chapel Falls, Spray Falls, Bridalveil Falls and Sable Falls. Some are relatively easy to reach, while others require longer hikes.

Sable Falls, for example, tumbles approximately 75 feet over sandstone formations before reaching Lake Superior.

If you’re planning a trip to Pictured Rocks, consider adding a few waterfalls to your itinerary. You may be surprised by how many can be combined with a day of exploring the area.

Waterfalls for Every Type of Traveler

You don’t have to be an avid hiker to enjoy the waterfalls of the Upper Peninsula.

Easy-to-Access Waterfalls

If you have limited time or mobility concerns, look for waterfalls with short trails, viewing platforms, or roadside access. Munising Falls and Bond Falls are examples of waterfalls where visitors can enjoy impressive scenery without committing to a long backcountry hike.

Waterfalls Worth the Hike

If the journey is part of the adventure, there are plenty of waterfalls that require a longer hike through the U.P.’s forests. These hikes can be especially rewarding during spring runoff and autumn when the surrounding forest is filled with color.

Winter Waterfalls

Don’t put away your waterfall list when the snow arrives.

Cold temperatures can transform U.P. waterfalls into enormous formations of ice. Some waterfalls become frozen curtains, pillars and caves, creating an entirely different experience from visiting during the summer.

Just remember that winter trails can be slippery and conditions can change quickly.

When Is the Best Time to Visit U.P. Waterfalls?

Spring is often an excellent time to see waterfalls at their most powerful. Melting snow and spring rain can increase the amount of water flowing through rivers and streams.

Summer provides the easiest hiking conditions and is a great time for combining waterfall visits with camping, hiking, fishing, swimming and sightseeing.

Fall may be the most scenic time to visit. The waterfalls are surrounded by the changing colors of the Upper Peninsula’s forests, creating excellent opportunities for photography.

Winter brings a completely different experience. Waterfalls can freeze into dramatic formations of ice, although visitors should use extra caution around icy trails, rocks, and moving water.

Waterfall Safety

Waterfalls are beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. Rocks around waterfalls are often wet and extremely slippery, and fast-moving water can be much more powerful than it appears.

When visiting a waterfall:

Stay on established trails whenever possible.
Follow posted signs and closures.
Keep children and pets away from dangerous edges.
Be extremely careful on wet or icy rocks.
Never assume a calm-looking section of water is safe.
Keep a safe distance from the top of a waterfall.
Check weather and trail conditions before heading out.
Don’t enter moving water near a waterfall.
